River

At Arcadia Travel, we love rivers and inland waterways – especially European.

Rivers connected the first civilisations, provide water for mankind, serve as ready-made national boundaries - and are fabulous to follow.

There are many possibilities to embrace waterways into your travels: cruise ships, smaller hotel barges, passenger ferries, day cruising, self-drive houseboats, adventures by canoe or raft – and riding or walking alongside on the paths.

CRUISES

Europe’s most famous rivers for cruising include the Rhine, Main and Danube, stretching nearly 4000 km from Amsterdam to the Black Sea.  The cross-continental water route opened in 1992 with the completion of the 171 km canal linking the Main and Danube – although a link was first proposed in 793 by the Emperor Charlemagne!

The most popular cruises sail Amsterdam to Budapest in 15 nights, a distance around 2400 km.

Amsterdam to Basel along the Rhine typically takes 7 to 9 nights and a side trip up the Mosel and back can add several more days.

Shorter cruises can be from 3 nights sailing the Seine - without leaving Paris.

Most river ships range from 80 to 200 passengers and are 4 to 5 stars in comfort.

Companies we can book include:

Scenic, APT, Evergreen, Viking, AMA, A-Rosa, Croisi Europe, Regina, Avalon, Uniworld, Lueftner (Amadeus) Crystal and Swiss Excellence.

Other European rivers popular for cruise ships include:

  • Mosel and Elbe Rivers in Germany
  • Seine, Rhone, Loire, Saone and Garonne in France
  • Douro in Portugal
  • Guadalquiver in Spain
  • Po in Italy
  • Dnieper in Ukraine
  • Volga in Russia

HOTEL BARGES

Much smaller than the cruise ships, hotel barges range from simple to luxury, and may cater for 6 to 30 passengers. They have the ability to navigate smaller rivers and canals, typically sailing in France, Belgium and Netherlands.

RIVER STAYS

Consider a taste of life, staying beside one of Europe’s wonderful waterways for a few nights, maybe even a month or more?

We have our own pretty riverside apartment house in the lively vintner town of Zell an der Mosel in Germany's Rhineland.  A week stay in Zell is the perfect match to a European river cruise.

Ask us about great value combinations on flights + cruises + stays.

BIKE & BOAT

Another way to explore the canals and rivers of Europe is on a bike and boat holiday.  There are many on offer.

HOUSEBOATS

France is the #1 place to hire self-drive houseboats – no boat licence required and navigable rivers and canals across much of the country.

England offers canal barging up and down an extensive network, also houseboats on the Norfolk Broads.

In Australia, the Hawkesbury River is idyllic for self-drive houseboating.

INLAND SAILING

Germany’s Lakes of Mecklenburg and Netherland’s Inland Waters are popular for sailing in hired yachts.
