MT PERRY & BOYNE VALLEY – ‘SURVEY’ OF PROPOSED RAIL TRAILS
Ride Bundaberg to Gladstone on sealed back roads through the scenic North Burnett Region following the proposed Mt Perry, Gayndah to Mundubbera and Boyne Valley Rail Trails as much as possible.
Some time in the future, 6 of these 7 days could be riding along rail trails!
Choice of camping or accommodation in pubs/cabins.
We will have in support of riders one crew member driving a 21-passenger mini-coach with roomy enclosed trailer.
1. Bundaberg <53km> Gin Gin
We will transfer in our bus from Nambour to Bundaberg in the morning.
The main road from Bunaberg to Gin Gin is busy and shoulder intermittent. However, about 50% we can ride on nearby minor roads. Half way along are the Mystery Craters. If some riders prefer a lift, that’s OK.
On the Bruce Highway, Gin Gin (population about 1000) is the 18th town mentioned in the song “I’ve been everywhere”.
The Gureng Gureng are the First Nations people of the regions we ride.
Accom includes motels, the Highway Pub and caravan park.
2. Gin Gin <54km> Mt Perry
Just out of town Route 12 turns west off the Bruce Highway. There are no towns or services until Mt Perry. It’s possible to check out the 3km ‘rail trail’ to nearby Tirroan village before we leave town (or afternoon of day 1).
The key feature today is the Boolboondah Rail Tunnel, accessed by gravel just over 1km from the road. It is a ‘rail trail’ that can be followed beyond the tunnel for 3km, rejoining the sealed road.
Mt Perry was a copper mining town that boomed in the 1870s when the population is said to have reached 30,000 (now 500). Rail arrived from Bundaberg in 1884 but closed in 1960.
Accoms include the Federal Inn, Grand Hotel and a nearby farmstay.
3. Mt Perry <73km> Gayndah
The Mt Steadman Road is the sealed route, meeting up with the Burnett Hwy for the last 8 km to the key regional town of Gayndah. Population is 2000 and the town has plenty of history with many interesting buildings. Local agriculture is mostly grazing and citrus.
Accoms include at least 4 motels, the Grand Hotel (pub) and caravan park cabins.
4. Gayndah <75km> Eidsvold
The morning takes back roads to Mundubbera (pop 1200) nearly 40km, keeping close to the Burnett River and following where we can the Gayndah Heritage Railway Rail Trail.
Our afternoon non-highway option looks like it’s mostly sealed, via Augustines Road and Bil Bil. Both routes are 37km.
Eidsvold (po 600) boasts the impressive RM Williams Centre and Museum.
Accoms include motel, hotel-motel and caravan park.
5. Eidsvold <78km> Waratah Hotel (north of Monto)
After 19km on the Burnett Highway we turn onto the Abercorn Road. Monto (pop 1200) at 65km is the first town on the way.
Taking Route 69, Mungungo is 13km further and home to the Waratah Hotel and not much more.
Accom pub rooms or camping.
6. Waratah Hotel <69km> Ubobo
Follow Route 69 all day including a steep descent into the Boyne Valley. here and there we see relics of the Gladstone to North Burnett Railway. Looks like a very quiet road.
Ubobo is a locality with a rustic groups camp centre.
7. Ubobo <77km> Gladstone
More quiet riding on Route 69 to the town of Calliope (pop 5000) at 55km with several crossings of the old railway.
Just over 20km to Gladstone on a busy road. Take a ride on our bus if you prefer.
On completion, we will run riders back to Bundaberg – or south to Nambour.

We’ll carry your kit (with our 21 seat bus and trailer) and set up one, two or more support points per day.
We will pick you up if you need.
Cost $500 per rider (incl GST).
Plus meals and camping/accom extra.
If you like accommodation, be prepared for pub rooms and note that we can’t get en-suite every night. Pub/cabins approx $40-50 per night per person. Breakfast either with pubs or at our campsite (for $10).
We offer a camping+gear+breakfasts option 6 nights for $150 ($25 a night) per person.
We’ll have supplies for breakfasts and enroute lunches where local options are limited.
If you book camping, you can upgrade on the day if rooms are available.
Pop up tents & mats we can provide (no extra charge) or bring your own. Sleeping bags we can provide on request.
Start and end points at Bundaberg and Gladstone rail stations.
Transfers for riders and bikes from Gladstone back to Bundaberg included (same day).
Transfers to/from Nambour Station rider+bike+bags add $100 each way (on first and last days).
Maximum 20 riders.
Maximum 12 riders+bikes on the transfer stages.
Minimum 6 riders.
Non-riding partners can travel for half price.
