19 May Day trip: Mary Valley Rail Trail Walk & Hinterland Villages
It’s a scenic one hour drive from Noosa Junction over the hills to tiny Brooloo, once the rail-head for the Mary River Railway.
These days the last leg of the line is now the Mary Valley Rail Trail, a pretty 5km gravel path you can walk at your own pace through countryside and rainforest to the cute village of Imbil. There’s even a chirpy bellbird colony. With plenty of shade and gentle gradients, the trail is open to walking, cycling and horse-riding.
Imbil has a bakery, cafe, pub – and Sunday Market. We’ll have about 2 hours for Brooloo-Imbil so the walk can be followed by a pastry, coffee and stroll of the market stalls.
A half-hour further, lunch stop is funky Kenilworth for a good hour. Take in the galleries then grab a bite from the cafes, bakery or famously tasty Kenilworth Cheese Factory.
Next, it is about a 45 minute drive following the Upper Mary River to Cambroon and Conondale Store, climbing to Maleny for a 30 minute browse and a break.
Driving 20 minutes more is Montville, and we have an hour to relish in the temptations of this ridge-top village with its many quirky shops, gourmet cafes and awesome views over the Sunshine Coast.
It’s an hour back to Noosa Junction, returning around 5pm.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions we postpone operations until further notice.
